Butch Queen

Sound on Sound Presents: Butch Queen

Butch Queen

“Butch Queen returns and it’s happening on a whole new level: on the outside stage of Mohawk Austin and presented by Sound on Sound Fest. This is going to be a drag queen blood bath like no other.

Eight new queens are on the scene and the wigs are bigger and the nails are sharper. The competition includes men from Austin’s entertainment and music scene performing drag for the first time. Each new queen is paired with a seasoned (or well marinated) drag queen to help him learn his lip sync, get into a look, and convince the judges that she is the real Butch Queen to reign supreme.”

A $1,000 prize and two passes to Sound On Sound Festival are awarded to the winning mother and daughter team.

Hosted by everyone’s favorite witch in a corset, Louisianna Purchase.

DJ sets by Mouthfeel and Dylan Reece.

One of our crew,  Jan-Michael, will be competing.

ESBY Apparel

ESBY Apparel Men’s Launch

We recently dropped in on our neighbors and friends ESBY Apparel for the launch of their menswear line. The release is the culmination of extensive R&D applied to men’s clothing, while still maintaining the minimal aesthetic the brand is known for.

We are excited to partner with ESBY Apparel this Father’s Day weekend, and will be set up at their flagship here in the Bouldin Neighborhood. Enjoy trims and cuts while shopping for the Dad in your life and sippin’ on cold ones from Hops & Grain. Check the link to the event page.

Dope Toast Hand Poke Tattoos

Slow Poke

We recently sat down for a chat and poke with Austin artist Lauren Dunkin. You can find “Dope Toast Hand Poke Tattoos” for all inquiries at @dopetoast.

Hey, Lauren! Could you tell us a bit about who you are and where you’re from?

“I was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. I had the desire to get out of my small town pretty early on and moved to Austin in 2011 for college, majoring in graphic design. But for the last three years, I have run a vintage boutique with my best friend and recently decided to take my passion for art and tattoos and become my own boss.”

How long have you been drawing/illustrating?

“For as long as I can remember! My great grandmother, grandmother and mother have all been artists. I have old drawing journals from elementary school that I still hold on to. I am grateful to my parents still, for letting me spray paint and draw pictures on the walls of my high school bedroom. I would even paint on blank canvas shoes, skateboards, surfboards and denim jackets in high school for extra cash. I guess you can say I have always had an entrepreneurial bug.”

Where do you find inspiration for your art?

“A lot of it comes from conversations I have with friends. Bouncing ideas off people for a flash sheet. I’m always trying to find a little humor in the drawings. I feel like a tattoo is a time stamp for where you are in life at that moment. So I guess you can say I’m inspired by the times. I also get a lot of inspiration from vintage illustrations and patterns. I feel like we are all really just building on what we know from the past anyway.”

What is your first/weirdest memory/experience “poking”?

“I feel like getting into intimate situations for prolonged periods of time with strangers was the weirdest part of this whole thing. Boys coming over for a thigh tattoo, having to take off their pants, and then have me shave them is always a fun way to get to know somebody! Who needs Tinder when you have tattoo needles, am I right?”

Sorry, Closed for Comedy

Sorry, Closed for Comedy

Our very first “Sorry, Closed for Comedy” was a hit!  Thanks to our hosts, comics, sponsors and everyone who came to hang out and make it such a special evening.  With all of the donations we were able to raise over 200 dollars for Out Youth!

Stay tuned for updates on the next episode, but for now, check out the highlights here:

SHED Barber and Supply: Bouldin

Your Neighborhood Barber.

One of our commitments at SHED Barber and Supply is to reflect the neighborhood that we settle into. We strive to create a welcoming and inviting atmosphere with which members of the community can identify. Our first location resides in South Austin’s Bouldin district, one of the oldest communities in Austin and home to late humorist and radio personality John Henry Faulk. We worked with local hand sign painter James Bickerstaff to bring our quietly confident brand updates to life. James’ attention to detail and craft reflects the same values maintained by our shop’s crew. James, who has been professionally hand sign painting for three years now, has “always been into letter structure and painting” and admits to “stumbling upon it by accident” but “got hooked immediately”

Walking into the shop you’ll notice our address proudly marked above the doorway. Our dynamic pricing board makes our services hard to miss. Finally our location stamp endcaps our barber stations, planted to remind those who visit where they are; SHED Barber and Supply: Bouldin.
