Barney Cools

Brand Introduction: Barney Cools

We’d venture a guess that Barney Cools’ rapid climb to the top of the surf leisure realm wasn’t due to an elevator pitch, as their ambitious quest to conquer all aspects of inspired living would take a whole lot more than five stories to convey. Alongside their extensive range of apparel, Barney Cools has transcended the concept of a clothing brand by displaying their diverse range of interests to the masses via their blog; party recaps, food reviews, travel tips, photos of #babes, curated playlists that suit even the most fickle of ears – all this and more in a successful campaign of showing the e-world what they’re all about.

Founded in 2014 by the former creative director of Australian surf-style monolith Zanerobe, Nat Taubman, Barney Cools has quickly developed a reputation as being a go-to resource for classic yet subtly unique pieces that can be had for a more than reasonable price.

Barney Cools can best be described as clothing that’s worn by people with a personal ethos of care-free living with a slight dash of designer sensibilities; striped tees with relaxed cuts distinguish the wearer as a purveyor of cool, woven shirts that are just as comfy during a night out as they are at the beach, and trousers that practically beg passersby to ask “where did you get that?!”.

BOW3RY

Brand Introduction: BOW3RY

The draw of horror films is that for a brief moment, they take us out of our comfort zone; we realize that the moment is temporal, but perceptually, we feel as though everything we’re seeing is disturbingly absolute. That feeling of ephemeral uneasiness is where BOW3RY thrives. By distilling the world around them through their twisted, almost macabre filter, the Australian-based brand warps notions of what should and shouldn’t be printed on cotton and worn for the world to see.

With that influence of terror in mind, BOW3RY uses classic skateboarding imagery as its chosen vehicle of visual expression. Heavy, jarring graphics make up their most recent collection, and when juxtaposed with other brands on hangers, BOW3RY sticks out like a Wilhelm scream in a (supposedly) barren forest.

Shanzyan, Surf is Dead

Brand Introduction: Surf is Dead

Close your eyes and imagine the classic motif that is beach culture: Fitted boardshorts, surfboards sticking out of the sand, empty mai tai glasses, bonfires strewn about, the scent of sea salt and cedarwood filling the air…

Surf is Dead is none of that.

Expressive of a particular disdain for the played out obligatory tropes of beach life, Surf is Dead offers another perspective of the way things could – and arguably, should – be.

With graphic application that’s on par with luxury counterparts, they’ve managed to maintain their DIY roots which allows each piece to stand out on it’s own as something special.

Abrasive graphics with eye-catching color contrasts are a staple of everything Surf is Dead produces; t-shirts that not only intrigue everyone that comes across them, but denote a sense of intrigue and curiosity – most people have an idealistic view of what surf culture is, but Surf is Dead aims to tell the truth, and it’s that expression of authenticity that shines through in everything they create.

How Bazaar

Oh, “How Bazaar”

Over the weekend, we held our first annual “How Bazaar”. A curated shopping event, bringing together some of Austin’s most interesting and unique artists, crafters, clothiers and – oh yeah – a tarot card reader (really nice guy by the way).

Here’s some sights from the event if you missed out.

DUVIN DESIGN CO.

SHED Brands: DUVIN DESIGN CO.

Concerned with not only conveying their intent to party, Duvin Design Co. is wholly obsessed with utilizing the highest quality materials in their colorful, statement-making pieces. What began as – at the time – a fresh new take on surf-style apparel, Duvin’s pops of colorful pastels and attention grabbing sayings has evolved into an all-encompassing lifestyle that’s entirely their own.

Their most recent Spring/Summer collection has tastefully conveyed the laid back
day-drinking vibes of a toasty summer day with soft, playfully unique tees that are
sure to stick-out, regardless of one’s locale. In their own words, Duvin is in search of
the perfect combination of “wow this is really comfortable” and “F**k that’s so sick!”.

In addition to their more casual offerings, Duvin has continued to expand their quest
to outfit the perpetual party-seeker in radical defiance of all dress-codes by releasing
button-ups in styles that can only be attributed to them. With the splashes of color
and eye-grabbing prints that they’ve come to be known for, the collared shirt has
been elevated from the boring, drab ‘essential’ of yesteryear, only to be transformed
into an inspiring expression of all the things that Duvin stands for: fun, “coolio vibes”,
and radness.

Outside of channeling the energies of the best party you’ve never been to, Duvin
Design Co. has emphasized their plans to evangelize their lifestyle to the masses;
working with the likes of musicians, athletes, and people who simply care about how
they look. Most recently, NFL star Odell Beckham Jr. has participated in a campaign
for their “Matty” Sweat Shorts.
